CPM formulas

CPM (cost per mille) is the price of 1,000 ad impressions. Every result on this page comes from one relationship, rearranged three ways:

Budget = (Impressions ÷ 1,000) × CPM
CPM = (Budget ÷ Impressions) × 1,000
Impressions = (Budget ÷ CPM) × 1,000

Worked examples

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM stand for?

CPM stands for cost per mille, where “mille” is Latin for thousand. It is the price an advertiser pays for every 1,000 ad impressions.

How do you calculate CPM?

CPM = (total cost ÷ total impressions) × 1,000. For example, spending 2,000 to get 500,000 impressions gives a CPM of 4.

How do I calculate the budget for a CPM campaign?

Budget = (impressions ÷ 1,000) × CPM. For 500,000 impressions at a CPM of 4, the budget is 2,000.

What is a good CPM?

There is no single good CPM. It depends on the platform, ad format, audience, country and season. Compare your CPM with your own past campaigns, and judge it by the results it delivers, such as clicks or sales, not by the number alone.

Is CPM the same as eCPM?

Not exactly. CPM is usually the price an advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions. eCPM (effective CPM) is the revenue earned, or cost paid, per 1,000 impressions across a mix of pricing models such as CPC or CPA. Learn more about eCPM.
